- Actual attic floor area. Not your home’s listed square footage. Garages, vaulted ceilings, two-story sections, and covered patios all change it. A 2,000 sq ft home might have a 1,200 sq ft attic — or 1,700.
- Clearance and walkability. A 6-foot ridge with a plywood catwalk and a 28-inch crawl with no decking are different jobs at the same square footage.
- Number of access points. Some homes have one small hatch in a bedroom closet. Some attics are split by framing into sections that can only be reached separately.
- Existing insulation type, depth, and condition. This determines whether removal is needed at all — the single biggest swing factor.

Why we push R-44 rather than stopping at code: the expensive parts of an attic project are labor, setup, containment, and equipment — not the insulation itself. Adding two inches of depth is mostly material. You are buying performance at close to wholesale, because the costly work has already been done.
Beyond R-49 the curve flattens. Each additional inch returns less than the one before it, and in a coastal San Diego climate R-60 rarely earns back the difference. Reading a Quote: 8 Red Flags
- A firm price without an inspection. Nobody can price an attic they haven’t entered.
- No R-value stated. “New insulation” is not a specification.
- No attic square footage listed. If they didn’t measure it, they didn’t inspect it.
- Air sealing not mentioned. Either it’s included and unlisted, or it’s being skipped.
- “Removal not needed” with no photos. Ask to see pictures of your actual attic.
- Pressure to sign today. Legitimate discounts don’t expire in four hours.
- No license number on the quote. Insulation work requires a C-2 license in California. Verify at the CSLB license check portal.
- Large deposit requested. California caps residential down payments at $1,000 or 10% of the contract price, whichever is less.
That licensing point deserves weight. A general B contractor cannot legally perform insulation work in California — it requires a C-2 Insulation and Acoustical Contractor license. Is There a Federal Tax Credit for Insulation in 2026?
No. The Section 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit — the one that covered insulation, air sealing, windows, doors, and HVAC — was terminated for property placed in service after December 31, 2025.
The change came from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed July 4, 2025. The statute is plain: 26 U.S. Code § 25C now states that the section shall not apply to any property placed in service after December 31, 2025.
The Residential Clean Energy Credit (Section 25D), which covered solar and battery storage, ended on the same date.
What this means for a 2026 insulation project. There is no federal tax credit available for it. Any contractor telling you otherwise in 2026 is either out of date or selling you something. Be skeptical of a quote that leans on a credit to make the price look better.

You may still be able to claim it. The credit applies to property placed in service on or before December 31, 2025, and is claimed on your 2025 return using IRS Form 5695.
