Condensation & moisture

Duct condensation is a clue that deserves a full inspection, not a one-line diagnosis.

A cold duct surface can fall below the dew point of the surrounding air and collect condensation. But visible water around ductwork does not automatically prove that insulation is the only cause. If a homeowner sees wet insulation, staining below a duct, droplets on a jacket or water at a register, the correct first step is to identify where the moisture is coming from. Repair, re-insulate, or replace?

The right scope depends on what is underneath the jacket.

Homeowners often call because the outer jacket looks bad, but the visible insulation is only the outer layer of the decision. What is the difference between duct repair and air duct insulation?

Repair fixes the duct — leaks, damage, failed sections. Insulation is the thermal jacket around a healthy duct, keeping the air inside at temperature while it crosses the attic. They pair constantly, always in that order: a wrapped leak is still a leak, just better dressed.

Do attic ducts really lose that much temperature?

In our climate, meaningfully — summer attics run hot enough that bare or failed-jacket metal sheds supply-air cooling along the whole run. Supply-air temperature can change along a duct run, but register temperature alone does not identify the cause because airflow, leakage, balance and equipment conditions also matter. My ducts have insulation already. Why is it not working?
